Monday Night 3321 Chapter 14

Comprehension, while understanding what you are reading is important you also need to understand what you write. Learning and understanding to write well and pay attention to what the author is saying is key in developing a good reading and writing relationship.

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 13

Lterary circles: should be lead by the students, normally used with good quality books that can interest anyone, for something like this I would probably use a classic literary work for my classroom something like Shakespeare or Austen. The students should be given sufficient time to act out scenes from the work, disscuss various things they liked or disliked, and be able to anser questions amongst each other.

Again I feel William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet or even Twelfth Night would make a good literary circle title. It would give them plenty to disscuss and think about. Also acting out a scene from the paly would be easier. However, I favor Jane Austen most of all her literary works would also give a good informational about the time frame, but it would still give the students plenty to disscuss and process. So either of these authors to me would make a good choice..

Monday Night Chapter 12

Independent Reading.. yay.. This is why I love reading and buying young adult novels my classroom library will be packed with great titles and every student will find something they like.. This is a great way to help your students find books that will interest them, it will also give them one-on-one time. By reading independently the students can engage each other by doing book reports or projects to present to the class, also allowing them to learn from each other..

Great titles for Independent Reading: Ally Carter's Gallagher Girl series. A private all girls school known as the Gallagher Academy For Exceptional Young Women, is in Fact a school for future female spies. What better series for anyone into books of this kind. Another author would be Rick Riordan, and his Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Generally more for a middle school reading level; however, for those who aren't able to read at a high school level this series would be a good one to read.. This series is also being made into a movie release date is Feb. 12, 2010..

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 11

Guided Reading is normally done in small groups: the goal is to use various forms of literature to help the students comprehend the material.
This time I thought a good author to read about would be Scott Westerfield, he writes sci-fi for adults but also writes young adult novels like the ones featured below. Each series is different usually all of them deal with some type of paranormal characters. These books tend to hold your interest because some deal with subject that are true issues within society. The Uglies series for instance takes place in the future, where upon your 16th birthday you undergo a mandatory series of cosmetic surgery to which you can't get out of, making everyone beautiful. These novels are directed at teens and some even preteens.

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 10

This chapter talks about read alouds.. This is generally where the teacher reads to his/her students. The students usually pay more attention to the content and story this way and tend to enjoy it. Another thing talked about in this chapter are the shared readings, these generally tend ot involve both the teacher and the student taking turns reading, allowing the student to become more comfortable being an independent reader.

Read alouds can be from any book that the students and the teacher can agree upon, I would say it's probably better to choose a book more highly popular at the moment, allowing the students who can't afford to buy the book or have a hard time reading at that level the opprotunity to be apart of the action.

Currently the most popular title is The Twilight Series.. With this you could probably also do a movie day towards the end of the semester as a reward with the schools n parental consent.

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 9

Non-fiction... Usually biographies, Diaries, and historical books fall under this category. The Non-fiction genre tends to disscuss social needs, cultural aesthetics, historic narratives, and lifes lessons. While normally non-ficiton leans toward a more adult audience it has evolved over the years to include a younger audience.

Many more notible works of non-fiction for teens would include The Diary of Anne Frank: the story of Anne and her families struggle during the Nazi invasion, told through the eyes of a young girl. Anne was young when the events happen, but her passion was writing so she kept a diary that was later found amoung their belongings and later published. Another one is Uncle Tom's Cabin, the story follow 3 slaves and their experiences in and out of slavery, taking place in the pre-civil war time of the south.

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 8

Fiction comes in many different forms. Romance, Suspense, Horror, and Sci-fi are some of the more popular forms; however, many books could fall under various genres, making hard to like only one particular type of fiction. Usually students of all ages are able to find something they like within the Fiction area..

I prefer Young Adult novels, not only does reading in this particular category help keep me informed of hot new titles that would ensnare a teens interest, but it also helps me build my library up so that I have books in the classroom for the students to use..

James Patterson, is best known for his Mystery Thriller books; however, recently he has ventured into writing young adult novels, usually with a suspense feel to them they keep the readers hooked every step of the way.

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 7

Picture books.... Again while I understand the need to be able to use picture books to help teach kids the short literary form like poem, sonnets and so forth. I will not be using them in High School level english courses. However, some picture type reading material I find induces teens to read are comic books or Manga. Though they have little educational value sometimes students have to start somewhere..

Various types include the Comic, Graphic Novel, or Manga..

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 6

Traditional Literature... Which would be traditional stories are stories that are from the perspective of a culture. They usually contain oral tradition, values, morals of the culture, preserve significant events, explore the human consciences and keep readers entertained.

A series of books written by Esther Friesner are pretty close to Traditional Literature, but the audience would be for young adult readers. The stories based off of Helen of Troy before she became "The face that launched a Thousand Ships".. Friesner, uses factual accounts of Sparta, Troy and events that took place, while weaving a story of the young Helen.

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 5

This ended up being on poetry; however, not a big fan of poetry.. Blah..

The most recent author for teens that writes using verse is Ellen Hopkins she tells the story of her own daughters decent into addiction. Suprisingly enough for poetry it's pretty good, than again the accounts of the emotions and the problems that the people involve suffer comes from personal account.

This author has also written:

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 3

This chapter talks about how students comprehend, every student comes of course from different backgrounds and assuming that your student has been taught something or that they should obviously know what it is because lets say they live in Texas, doesn't mean they do. As a teacher remembering that students may not be automatically familiar with things you think they should be a good way to start, on the road to becoming a better teacher. A good idea to see what your students know maybe to ask probing questions like if you are talking about the Alamo, ask if anyone as been, or if they know what it is. This will help you get a feel for the way to present the material you are planning to present.

An author that I have recently been introduced to through her House of Night series is P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast. A mother-daughter tag team series. If you liked The Twilight Series you are sure to enjoy this one. This series of books has everything the teens need to be sweept away Vampires, Humans, Celebraties, A Prophecy, and Many Relationship issues. So far the series extends to 6 books with more on the way, keeping your students interested in reading.

Monday Night 3321 Chapter 2

As a teacher our classrooms will be diverse, and we must remain objective to personal prejudices, religious views, and bias opinions. Helping to educate the children who walk through your door requires understanding of all different cultures and ethnicities, and remembering to accomedate all the children by decorating accordingly.

Ann Brashares is best known for writing The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.. A series of books that teach you about the complications in life, friendship, and family. They are a very heartwarming series, and each girl is very easily relatable to real girls in society.

Another book that I feel is wonderful to read by her is The Last Summer (of You & Me), this book is for young adults probably more for those getting ready to leave high school behind. It's about two sisters who spend every summer at there parents beach house, both are different personality wise. When their childhood friend Paul return's after being gone for the past 3 years, the girls and him are thrust into new changes and events that bring them into the adult world.

Mon 3321 Chapter 1

I liked the fact it's the teachers job to make the room feel inviting. The students need to see you care by posting positive things on the board, making it fun a living for them, but also educational. A student needs to feel the teacher care about them and this is a good start.

Meg Cabot is one of my favorite authors. 2 of my favorite series are:

1-800-Where-r-u, is about a girl who after being struck by lightning gains a unique power. Afraid of what might happen to her if she is discovered she chooses not to let her family into her secret. Along the way she makes new friends and builds upon the relationship of her old ones. While useing the power to help others seeking no reward. What happens though when the government finds out, and they need to her help locate missing criminals?

The seconde series by Meg Cabot I absolutely love is the Mediator series.
After her mothers remarriage Suze not only gets a new father, but two new step-brothers. On top of that she is forced to leave her city street for the fab California life only the new home her family has just moved into seems to to haunted by a ghost. Yeah just a typical occurance in Suze's life, a ghost who must need her help to pass on to the otherside, or does he, why else would a ghost seek out a Mediator?

3344 M&W Narrative

A Narrative can be almost anything from a book to a song. A narrative tells a story, and the stroyline can be any where from Romance to Childrens Literature. As long as the writing conveys a message to the reader and has a beginning, middle, and end. Not only are those factors important, but the plot and details are to, why write if you aren't going to make it worth acknowleding. One example of a Narrative would be The Lightening Theif, it's got it all, and is a good storyline to use when teaching about the Greek Gods of Olympus. Not only is it pretty factual about the different God's, but the storyline would hold the audience it's intended for.

3344 M&W Narrative

This is a preview of my narrative I have not finnished it and I need to fix some mistakes, but I will continue to improve let me know what you guys think

Dear Diary,

The year is 2015 It’s the middle of the night in July, what in the past many would look forward to as summer, especially here in Texas. Now; however, is considered winter, not just what many people consider Texas winter, where the temperature drops to maybe 30 degree’s, but a freezing life taking winter, that which many would consider an ice age. It’s funny everyone talked about it and pretended they cared, but nothing really changed, now worldwide Billions of lives have been lost, the weather changes rapidly from extreme heat to extreme freezing, which I recall is how the Moon’s temperature changed during day and night, now it changes here in the same manner, as if nothing is left to protect us. Global Warming is the cataclysm that has enslaved us to being more aware of the exact time of day, and scurrying around finding shelter. We are no longer free, as we once assumed we had the right to be, we are now servants to the weather, and I am among one of the survivors. My name is Jennifer and here is my story.

3344 M&W - Missed Class

Last week I got really sick with the Flu so I stayed home, tuesday I was cleared to come back; however, wednesday I ended up sleeping in. I heard we were suppose to bring in 5 items that represent different things, since I wasn't in class I thought I would tell you what they are.

More precious then gold: My family

Something that makes me warm: These little cut out hearts my best friend gave me..

Something from Long ago: I am not a keeper of things nor do I care for many objects but my father kept this music box that I got when I was born, I don't have it but I have a picture of it.

Something that makes me Laugh and something that makes me Cry: The guy in the picture thats posted on this blog. He makes me laugh a lot yet I also cry because of him.. hah.. That one was hard cause I rarely cry so trying to find something wasn't easy.

It's hard to say which one is my fondest memory, I don't really choose to think of things that way. I guess though the one that makes me sigh when I think about it is the one that makes me Cry. His name is Sean, the guy in the picture with me, he is younger then I am but we have been friends now for a year and a half, and work together. Thats actually how we met, sometimes I wonder if it was good that we ever did, but at the same time I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't remember when it happen, but some where down the path I fell in love with him, decided that I needed him to know to let him decide what he wanted; however, this back fired on me because he was already aware of it, and wanted the topic to not come up again. I couldn't understand why, then I realized that it's because he didn't feel the same for me and it hurt, but what hurt the most is he knew my feelings yet continued acting like we always did, which everyone thought we were dating if that gives you an image of how we acted. It hurt so slowly I started to pull away, and he would do things to ensure our continued close friendship, when I asked him why he kept trying to keep me close when he didn't want me as his girlfriend he simply said that I should let my feelings for him go, but that he needed me to be the way we have been because he loves me. That made me cry so hard, for one he was telling me that he loved me but not the way I wanted him to and because of that I needed to pretend my feelings didnt matter that way we could still be the way we have been before I started to care more then I should. I hate crying and I hate seeing people cry it annoys me and I hate girls that cry over a guy, but that day I realized sometimes you can't help it the emotions and hurt you feel are sometimes to much, and crying is the only release. I am currently his friend but because of the way things have gone and the feelings I still can't seem to change I made our friendship change, much to his disappointment but I try in some areas to pretend things are the same even though I know they aren't. However, I think he will always be my fondest memory this one especially because it allowed me to see the prejudices I had been harboring...

3344 M&W Personal Writing

Personal Writing: My choice of personal writing changes monthly, currently I am in the habit of using text messages, like all my friends as a means to communicate. I realize how impersonal it is and how annoying it can be for some, but I find it the easiest of ways to communicate. I actually have become so bad that it's almost the only method other then facebook. I have become so accustom to it that actually calling someone or picking up the phone when someone calls has become almost inconvenient for me. However, I enjoy it since I can usually do it anywhere and at anytime, no matter the situation. Most my friends also enjoy it since it's easy, and convenient, I think the only thing I dislike about it is that it's a slow method of communication, and sometimes takes forever to get a response. Yet I don't see my self changing the way I choose to communicate, its just convenient and sometimes enjoyable, you can say things or express things you wouldn't normally express where other people can hear you.

3344 M&W- If I won

If I won the lottery, I would be the most excited person in the world; well one of the most excited that is, I think my sister would be the most excited. After the excitement wore off and the shock settled, I would begin making my plans about what I would do with the money, because I wouldn't just want to start spending it without a plan, thats a good way to get yourself into trouble.

I would have to believe though that the first thing I would do is account for taxes, so I know I wont over spend. After I have done that, I would begin looking for houses, one for me, one for my brother and his fiancee and one for my mother and sister. Once I settled on the houses I would allow for spending to furnish and decorate the homes. After that I would buy new cars for each of us. After that I guess I would put away in a savings account a good 10% of the money.

Other then that I really don't know, what I would do if I won the lottery. In the end I guess I'm a practical person, the basics are really anyone needs and I'm not a lavish type of person, that would be my sister. I just want a place of my own and some nice accessories other then that I would be set for life, and having the extra money would be just a nice advantage.

3344 M&W- Writing is a Process!!!!!!

Just in case people consider this cheating, I will also write out my version of the writing process, although in case you would like to know where I found this, just in case you want to make copy of for your class room, here: http://faculty.uoit.ca/hughes/Writing/TheWritingProcess.gif

So Yes, WRITING IS A PROCESS!!!!!!!!!!!

Step1: PREWRITING: This step is where all the brainstorming and ideas start either popping into your head or you end up with a brain malfunction. So the best thing to do is set yourself and your students up with a Semantic map/ Concept map, and help them to organize there thoughts or begin to find out what they may want. I have located a place that will help you just as a courtesy..

Step 2: DRAFTING: This is where you start to put all those ideas, details, and thoughts on to paper, at this point in the process it is usually best to handwrite this, not only does it help you keep focused on the content but it helps you not worry about unimportant things like the computer screaming at you cause you misspelled something or you have fragmented sentences. Why bother with that when your just trying to lay out the foundation of your work..

Step 3: REVISING: This part is where a writer's workshop or a writing confrence should take place, in groups of 3 or partners, have the students look over each others work, making sure to look only at the sentences, content, word choice, and of course to maybe recommend that they add or take out pieces of the work.

Step 4: EDITING: Again this is a good time either for the workshop or conference, and even some time for self evaluation. Let the students work on this by themselves give them the chance to find and fix mistakes, then allow the groups or partners to have a look and determine if they left anything out, this is the part where Spelling, Capitalization, Puncuation, Grammar, and Paragraph Structuring will need to be considered. This is also a good time for you as a teacher to be going around and looking to see where and if the students may need to be retaught or if something should be rediscussed. *At the very least for the older students.*

Step 5: YAY!!!! You completed your assignment, now what to do? Do you stick it in the binders and leave there all year so the students can wonder why they bothered spending so much time on it? NO!!!!!!!!!!! YOU PUBLISH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously if you assumed the first one, that a one way ticket to have the students loath you, really.. Find a way to get the hard work of your students out there for people to see, create a class book of stories to sell for a $1 as a fundrasing campaign. Post stories on the wall, or in the hall.. Whatever it is just do something to show the students that hardwork pays off and not just by receiving a grade, show them what they did means something.

3344

Well I would love to have talked about ch.1 with everyone; however, I still have yet to recieve my books which is kind of annoying! I did take the MI test and found that I am a Logical and Musical Learner, which I guess makes sense; however, I think it also has more to do with my interests more so then learning style since I've never learned musically before or bothered to try, but I do listen to music while I work, I just don't think thats what they had in mind. Anyway, so I guess on to the next assignment..

My First Blog: EDRG 3321 & EDRG 3344

Hey guys my name is Jennifer, most people call me Jen!! Honestly, it doesn't matter which one you choose to call me, either is perfectly appropriate. This is the first time I have set- up a blog, and even though it's for the purpose of classes I look forward to getting to know some of you better through this. I'm a fairly private person but I am learning to be a little more open, so this is a unique and fun way to work on that as well. So far I believe the classes are going to be wonderful, the teachers are a lot of fun and even though I can tell it's gonna be very time consuming I am happy to say in the end it will be 100% worth it. Well until next time Live, Love, and Laugh; life's to short not to.
