3344 M&W- Writing is a Process!!!!!!

Just in case people consider this cheating, I will also write out my version of the writing process, although in case you would like to know where I found this, just in case you want to make copy of for your class room, here: http://faculty.uoit.ca/hughes/Writing/TheWritingProcess.gif

So Yes, WRITING IS A PROCESS!!!!!!!!!!!

Step1: PREWRITING: This step is where all the brainstorming and ideas start either popping into your head or you end up with a brain malfunction. So the best thing to do is set yourself and your students up with a Semantic map/ Concept map, and help them to organize there thoughts or begin to find out what they may want. I have located a place that will help you just as a courtesy..

Step 2: DRAFTING: This is where you start to put all those ideas, details, and thoughts on to paper, at this point in the process it is usually best to handwrite this, not only does it help you keep focused on the content but it helps you not worry about unimportant things like the computer screaming at you cause you misspelled something or you have fragmented sentences. Why bother with that when your just trying to lay out the foundation of your work..

Step 3: REVISING: This part is where a writer's workshop or a writing confrence should take place, in groups of 3 or partners, have the students look over each others work, making sure to look only at the sentences, content, word choice, and of course to maybe recommend that they add or take out pieces of the work.

Step 4: EDITING: Again this is a good time either for the workshop or conference, and even some time for self evaluation. Let the students work on this by themselves give them the chance to find and fix mistakes, then allow the groups or partners to have a look and determine if they left anything out, this is the part where Spelling, Capitalization, Puncuation, Grammar, and Paragraph Structuring will need to be considered. This is also a good time for you as a teacher to be going around and looking to see where and if the students may need to be retaught or if something should be rediscussed. *At the very least for the older students.*

Step 5: YAY!!!! You completed your assignment, now what to do? Do you stick it in the binders and leave there all year so the students can wonder why they bothered spending so much time on it? NO!!!!!!!!!!! YOU PUBLISH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously if you assumed the first one, that a one way ticket to have the students loath you, really.. Find a way to get the hard work of your students out there for people to see, create a class book of stories to sell for a $1 as a fundrasing campaign. Post stories on the wall, or in the hall.. Whatever it is just do something to show the students that hardwork pays off and not just by receiving a grade, show them what they did means something.
